Julian J. Bedoya, P. E.

Julian Bedoya is a Senior Associate at Stress Engineering Services, Inc. Most of his work has centered on performing engineering analyses of pressure vessels and pipelines to determine if the equipment in question has enough mechanical integrity to continue operations.

Julian received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Florida International University (FIU), and a M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Texas A&M University.

He has been an active member of ASME since his undergraduate days at FIU, holding positions of treasurer and chair of the local ASME student section, winning second place in the Old Guard Prize (oral presentation competition), and presenting a paper as an undergraduate at the IMECE Conference in New Orleans in 2002. Akshat Agarwal - South Texas 2013 Young Engineer of the Year


Akshat Agarwal is a drilling and completions project consultant at T H Hill Associates Inc. (THH), based in northwest Houston. In his current role, he manages multiple complex projects for top oil and gas clients in failure analysis and design of drill string components.

In the past year, he led a team in Thailand to streamline a VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory) system for an Oil and Gas Major. In his short 4 year tenure at THH, he also co-authored the Fourth Edition of global drilling standard, DS-1, with input and sponsorship from over 40 global oil and gas companies.

Akshat�s award will be presented at the Young Engineers of the Year Evening Dinner on February 18th, during Engineers Week.

Governor Perry Appoints Sam Kannappan to Texas Board of Professional Engineers

Governor Rick Perry has appointed Sockalingam "Sam" Kannappan of Houston and Edward Summers of Austin to the Texas Board of Professional Engineers for terms to expire Sept. 26, 2017.

Sam Kannappan is a professional engineer and senior design engineer for SNC-Lavalin Hydrocarbons and Chemicals. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Gas Pipeline Safety Research Committee, a board member of the Society of Piping Engineers and Designers, and an advisory board member of the Asia Society of Texas.

Ed Summers is a retired certified public accountant (CPA) and professor emeritus of accounting at the University of Texas.

Leadership in Engineering Product Applications

Dr. Osman Khan has served Energy Sector in positions of increasing responsibilities with the world�s largest EPC contractors for more than 40 years after earning his Ph.D. from Imperial College of Science and Technology London as a Burmah Oil Company�s Scholar in Gas Technology. His career encompassed applications of major turbomachinery, sometimes the very first implementation, used in mega projects including the development of North Sea, Exxon-Mobil Santa Yenez offshore expansion in California, Adriatic LNG Gravity Based Terminal, Tar Sands Canada Utility systems FEED validation, world�s largest Crude Pumping Station and Gas Gathering/NGL Recovery Plants among the other challenging projects.

Over more than three decades, Malcolm Leader has provided outstanding engineering and consulting services to the petrochemical industry.

He has become a leader in rotor dynamic analysis and rotating equipment while repeatedly solving complex turbomachinery problems. He has been active with professional engineering societies and symposia. He has published numerous articles furthering the collective knowledge of rotor dynamics and rotating equipment. Malcolm Leader has exemplified leadership within the Engineering Profession and the design of rotating equipment.

Nathan Kim began his career as a Machinery Engineer at KBR in 2007 and is currently working as the senior sales coordinator for Oil & Gas projects in the Hydrocarbons Business Group. In his current role, he identifies commercial, operations, and legal risks, their impact, and steps for mitigation associated with all prospects in the Americas and Africa for review by executives. He also has managed internal operations, sales, and legal departments to develop winning strategies for proposals.

Nathan received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2006 and holds an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification from the State of Texas. While at UT, he became an active member of the student chapter and took on leadership roles in his church�s campus ministry.

Fellow Status Award

Steve Schultheis, was presented his Fellow Status Award, at the Shell 2011 Rotating Equipment Engineers Meeting (REEM 2011) in Bangalore, India in late November, Steve, with Shell as Rotating Machinery Team Lead - Asia, is assigned to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Steve is a recognized expert in Rotating Equipment Engineering with extensive experience in the oil and gas industry. He leads and has led engineering teams supporting dozens of large refining and chemical plants throughout the world, solving complex industry problems.

He has contributed to the engineering profession through his involvement with local professional organizations, leadership in industry conferences, leadership in industry task forces developing industry standards, and numerous peer-reviewed technical papers.

The ASME Dedicated Service Award is awarded only once in a lifetime to an ASME member, through ASME Honors & Awards
An energetic and innovative leader, Clint is a constant advocate for quality educational opportunities for ASME members and student members. Clint rejuvenated the Plant Engineering and Maintenance Technical Chapter in 1995, which has become one of STS�s most successful Groups, on which he currently serves as Treasurer.

In 2001, he co-founded the Plant Engineering Trade Show which is the largest source of funds for the South Texas Scholarship Endowment Fund, which issues scholarships annually to five area colleges.

Leadership in the Industry

Bernie has demonstrated engineering leadership qualities from the very beginning in his professional career while working at NL MWD where he was among the first of field engineers who were responsible for the original deployment and testing of early MWD (Measurement While Drilling) technologies in petroleum well drilling operations.

The Award will be presented to Bernie at the Gas Turbine meeting September 19th.

An Award Long Overdue to a Gentleman of Great Accomplishments

James R. Hutton�s career as a sales engineer with Dresser Clark covered nearly four decades, starting as an application engineer and working in various sales and management levels before retiring as president of Dresser Machinery International Division in 1986.

He currently is vice president of Compressor Engineering Corporation which builds custom made automation equipment and spare parts for gas compressors.

Hutton graduated from Columbia University Engineering Midshipman�s School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as chief Engineer on two Navy ships. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, as well as a bachelor of business administration from the University of Texas in Austin.

He is a registered professional engineer in four states: Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and New Mexico. He is author of a book entitled, "How to Sell Technical Equipment and Services" published by PennWell in Tulsa.

Dr. Doreen Chin, Awarded Fellow Status Dr. Chin has over 24 years of experience in the oil and gas and power generation industries and academia. Her experience includes technical management, engineering design, numerical / theoretical analyses, research, teaching, and experiment in multiphase flow, heat transfer, and thermodynamics.

Dr. Chin is employed with Shell International Exploration and Production, Inc, in Flow Assurance and Subsea Systems where she has worked in the Flow Assurance on the Brazil BC-10 Project Phases and the GoM Popeye Expansion Project.
